CANA Mourns The Death Of Chaplain Russell Worrell
Chaplain Russell Worrell (1965-2014)
It is with great sadness that we report that the Reverend (Fr.) Russell Worrell has died (Jan 10, 2014). “Chaplain Russell embodied what it means to be a chaplain and his work and service to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was immense” shared Bp Jones. In March 2013, at our Chaplain Convocation, many will remember Russell was awarded the “Chaplain of the Year” award for his work as a Community Chaplain with Sav-a-Life of Alabama. Russell’s passing leaves a deep, deep emptiness in all who knew him. His death came as the result of complications from the sarcoidosis that he had battled for much of his life. The disease took residence in his lungs and medical interventions to make possible a lung transplant were unsuccessful. The needs of the family are many, including financial help (see letter from Bishop Jones). As the first chaplain in this ministry to have passed away, the Bishop has directed the creation of the “Russell Worrell Benevolence Fund” to support both the Worrell’s and other families of chaplains who die while serving this diocese.
